Jason Hotchkiss

Pastor of Technology & Care

Jason Hotchkiss has been serving at Neighborhood since January 2004. Jason currently serves as the Pastor of Technology and Care, in the Community Life Department.

Tell us about yourself:

I was born on a border town between two great countries: Canada and the US. My mom is from Texas and my dad is from Ontario. The worlds of my family of origin are vastly different but connected by the common themes of Christ and crops. I grew up on a small dairy farm in a conservative little church. I always loved math and science yet drawn to Christian ministry. I was educated as an engineer and have been involved in the Information Technology sector for over 11 years. In 2003, I was called into full-time ministry as a pastor. I graduated with my Master of Divinity in May 2006.

What do you do as Pastor of Technology and Care?

Many have said that God leads us providentially to serve his kingdom and he never waste a hurt. God led me into a career in Information Technology back in 1994. So essentially my role is to equip our church from a pastoral perspective with technology tools to enable us to fulfill our vision for ministry and mission. I have a head for systems and a heart for the hurting. Secondarily, my role is to serve as a "healed-healer."  I am motivated by gratitude for God's provision for my own hurt, to shepherd and care for the hurting: the grieving, those beset by addictions, the emotionally and spiritually troubled.

What is the best part of your job?

I love the local church and it is awesome to be able to serve from my deep values in a setting that is truly Christ's heart and hands in the World. I can help use technology to God's glory! For me, caring is evangelism. I have been shaped by God to bring good news to the afflicted and I relish the opportunity to come alongside the grieving, those afflicted with addictions, those longing for transformation in Christ.

Lately, I have really enjoyed co-leader and co-training our first team of Stephen Minister - caregivers who come along side the hurt and be Christ to them one-on-one.

Another great benefit of serving here is the people who mentor me, especially, Tyler Scott, Mark Teyler and Larry Vold. I can't think of more passionate and equipped pastors to shape me for what God intends.

What do you think you would be doing right now if God had not called you to be in ministry?

Having been called to serve in a specific ministry, it is hard to think of what else I would do. The need to earn a living aside, I would probably enjoy several careers caring for people in some capacity,  education caregivers and pastoral counselors.

I would enjoy spending a lot of time being with my beloved wife Julie and our young son, Brendan. We would travel to the Holy Land. I would play more basketball and take some golf lessons.

What do you order at Starbucks?

I prefer the home team, Peets and I would order a Peppermint Mocha.

What do you collect?

Books, I love books, mostly non-fiction, about anything from Christian theology/ministry, how-to books, books about new ideas and solving life's challenges. I love tech gadgets too!

If you could be doing anything right now, what would it be?

Having a good time with family and friends.

Playing golf or basketball with friends who don't know Jesus and my son, if he was old enough. He will dunk some day, because he is in the 95% for height!

What is your favorite movie quote?

"I don’t want to be God anymore. I want you to decide what is right for me. I surrender to your will" - Jim Carey, Bruce Almighty

It's not often you hear a nugget of the Gospel in a secular movie...from a Canadian at that!

If you had a million dollars to spend today, what would you buy?

  • Give $200,000 to our church
  • Invest $200,000 in education for our son
  • Setup a $200,000 investment for my wife so that she would not need to work outside our home
  • Use $200,000 to buy a house with parking and a backyard for our family
  • Provide $100,000 for my parents retirement needs
  • Give $100,000 to Christian Higher Education
That's it!

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

That following Jesus would come more naturally to us all.

What talent do you wish you had?

To influence people more magnetically to Christ *AND* to golf like a pro.

What food do you absolutely love? What food do you hate?

Ice cream LOVE! liver HATE!
